Think About This

Ten Things; Ten Years
By Mark Roth on March 10, 2010 at 7:20 am
No, I didn’t write this:
When I first started homeschooling ten years ago, I quickly learned to depend upon the wisdom of experienced homeschooling moms. These ladies provided me with a listening ear and wise advice that proved true time after time. The longer I’ve homeschooled, the more I’ve added little nuggets to my own repertoire of wisdom. Here are the top ten things I have learned in my first ten years.
10. Invest in less curriculum and more educational toys.
9. Turn off the TV, the Internet, and all other electronic devices.
8. Don’t rush your children to read by a certain age.
7. Any time you can read aloud to your kids is time well spent.
6. Math does matter.
5. Schedule time for the things that fall by the wayside.
4. A day off will not harm your children’s education forever, and it might just be the one thing the whole family needs.
3. Homeschooling is hard.
2. Homeschooling is huge.
1. There is no perfect child, perfect home, perfect mom, or perfect family.

Homeschooling With Joy
By Mark Roth on March 9, 2010 at 10:29 am

Serious home educators spend many hours of diligent effort to make their homeschools a success. They do it for the children. They do it for God. They plan; they prepare; they coach and teach; they pray; they struggle. And on top of that they still have all their other roles: bread-winner, homemaker, husband, wife, and more.
It’s no wonder homeschooling sometimes becomes overwhelming. The once lofty goals grow dim and the focus turns to survival. If that’s where you are, or what you want to avoid, Homeschooling With Joy offers encouragement and practical help.

February 2010 Newsletter
By Mark Roth on February 19, 2010 at 11:15 am
On the 18th I sent out our February 2010 newsletter. You can get it via email from our home page.
Or you can read it right here. 🙂
- Policy Changes
- Contacting Us
- Damaged Books
- Tidbits
- In Closing
We have cut our targeted shipping time from a maximum of five business days to three. We also reduced some of our rates for Priority Mail service. More details and changes noted here:
We have also made some adjustments to our policies governing returns and refunds. I suppose the biggest change is to institute a minimum restocking fee of $4 — again, details here:
I know we have been difficult to get ahold of at times. Well, I’m working to change that. I have set up four new ways to contact us — fax, a special form, voicemail, and (if you are “lucky”) phone. Learn more here:
As you might imagine, we sometimes receive brand new books that got damaged in shipping. Several weeks ago we opened a box to find that several copies of “Storytime With the Millers” had their covers scored or creased. You can buy them here:
Damaged Storytime With the Millers
I also have a list of special product listings that I expect will change contents over the weeks. Right now I have three books listed there:
The above are special listings. You can see other damaged books, as well as used and returned ones, here:
Today we got our copy of Rod and Staff’s March 2010 newsletter. Their annual 10% Spring Textbook Discount is under way. Alas, we cannot match that and still make a profit. But in the interest of being open with you, I’m letting you know in case you wish to purchase directly from them instead of from us.
- In their newsletter they also make some textbook projections, among them these:
-
- Grade 8 Science (in Editorial)
- Recordkeeping (available this summer)
- Algebra (in writing stage)
- Reading 10 (in planning stage)
I like life’s highs (even though sometimes I find myself dreading the lows that I know are sure to come).
“Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here…” (Matthew 17:4).
Apparently good ole Peter wanted to prolong the experience.
I would have also, I’m sure.
But we have to come down.
Jesus went with them.
I’m glad He goes with me as well.
I send this newsletter only to people who WANT it. (If you want to forward it to a friend — well, that’s up to you. It’s certainly fine with me.)
