In this book, sorrows fall like rain, but they fall on the rock of a sure faith in God. Heritage will be a richer word for every believer who reads this book.
The heroine of this book, Barbara Graber Schrag, and her family, were among the group of Mennonites emigrating to America from Russia in 1874. The story begins in Germany, where these peace-loving people settled following their flight from one country to another seeking freedom from compulsory military service. Their journeys over the years had taken them from Switzerland -- where the earliest record of the Graber family was found -- to France, Austria, Poland and Germany. Finally, they migrated to Russia in acceptance of an invitation extended by Queen Catherine II, who promised them absolute freedom for one hundred years. When conditions changed after a period of years and the guarantee was withdrawn, plans were again made for emigration, this time to America.
A moving account of hunger, trials, and persecution. The story of Joseph Schrags, one of the early Mennonite emigrants from Russia. An unforgettable account.
